Tiger Talk - 2017 - Round 1 v St Arnaud

What a great start to Round one with the Tigers enjoying a home game against the Saints.

The under 13s started the day off for us with a great 4 quarter effort. The boys opened up a handy 3 goal lead at the first break; some wayward kicking by the saints in the second allowed the tiger cubs to hold onto a 3 goal lead at the main break. After half time the tigers ran away with it having 9 scoring shots to 5 to cap off a dominant display first up. Chase Tait was the multiple goal scorer with 4 to his name but was also well assisted in what was a great team effort by the boys. Best Players: Chase Tait, Thomas Cox, Tristan Dalbon, Cooper Allan, Will Conlan, Cruz O'Sullivan.

With plenty of boys playing their first game up in the under 16s, they probably come up against the toughest assignment in the league as there were some big kids in the saints outfit. While the difference showed on the scoreboard it certainly wasn't from a lack of effort, our boys tried hard all day and coaches Luke and Tom were pleased that the boys fought it out to the end. Best Players: Brody Weir, Tyson McKenzie, Brendan Hewlett, Jamie Harker, Connor Michael, Rylee McGarry.

The Reserves game got off to a good start with fill in skipper Addo winning the toss and going with the breeze. Unfortunately the tigers didn't capitalise on it and only come in with a 2 point lead at the first break. In the second, kicking into the breeze, the tiger’s lack of run was evident and we were being outplayed by the saints to come in at the main break 19 points down. After some inspiring words from Coach Jake the boys come out firing in the third quarter to reduce the saints lead back to 3 points. It looked as though the saints boys were slowing down a little and with plenty youth in our side we were able to over run them in the end to finish on top by 10 points. Best Players: Zac Wemyss, Cooper McLean, Perry Roberts, Jai Wright, Jarrod Arentz, Paedan Monaghan

The seniors were desperate to start the season off with a win. With the breeze behind them they started well with a 5 goal lead going into the first break. In the second quarter it looked as though the tigers work rate had dropped off and they had let the saints back into the game as we went into half time down by a point. After reassessing at half time the tigers come out to play with some hard running and a quick style of play they banged on 9 goals to 1 to set the game up. In the last quarter the boys finished off the game well with a 5 goal last quarter into the breeze to record and impressive 55 point win first up. Luke Martin was rock solid in defence, Billy had a day out up forward with 5 goals while Sully, Snooze and Schapes all chipped in with 3 each from the midfield, Fitzy and Craigy also enjoyed solid debuts in the tiger colours finishing with 2 goals each. Best Players: Luke Martin, Billy McInnes, Ryan O'Sullivan, Matt Elliott, Kyle Brasser, Tim Fitzgerald

Netball: A warm day for the start of the season and a different atmosphere with all games being played in the stadium. Thank you again to the St Arnaud girls for agreeing to play indoors due to our court not being ready.

Some new look teams took to the court and the holidays also had an impact with many juniors being unavailable. No 13 B game was played.

13 A: Under the guidance of Tarsh Hickey and Rene Griffiths our young girls played some great passages of play to score a comfortable win, 18 to 7. All girls contributed strongly but the award, donated by Ash Roberts, went to Charlee Hewlett for a solid game at goal keeper.

16A: Lana Durie had a mix of old faces and new talent in this side but after a slow start and some positional changes the girls drew away for a win, 35 to 20. The ‘Hair on Best” award going to Claudia Cox who showed great defensive skills.

16B: Nakia Nunn also had a mix of younger girls and older faces in the new look 16B team. The girls took a while to settle and although managed to get within 1 goal couldn’t overtake the St Arnaud girls and went down 19 to 12. The club award went to Isabella Shepherd who read the play well and displayed great court pressure.

C Grade: Under the guidance of Samantha Wight the C grade girls used many different combinations to score a come from behind win, 41 to 31. Chelsea Michael earned Lacey Elliott’s massage voucher for a stellar game in defence.

B grade: As we had many new faces in both out A and B grades Coaches Abby Walklate and Ash Roberts tried many combinations in both games. The girls quickly adapted to their new positions and the newcomers to our club fitted like a glove. The B grade won 61 to 31 with Shaniah Nunn gaining the club award for great work at both ends of the court.

A Grade: A fast game with both teams showing great court pressure and some great defensive work in the goal circle. Nakia Nunn played a blinder and shot incredibly well to earn the East Charlton Hotel award in a 68 to 30 victory.

Today we take on the demons so our 16A & 13B have a bye. To all other girls, let’s hear those tigers roar and work hard to bring home victory.

Hockey: Well done to everyone that took to the field and the court on the weekend, the weather is always tough at the start of the season. A big thanks goes out to all the volunteers who got the Tigers camp ready for our first game of the season!

We had three games of Minkey played this week, with many enthusiastic young players wanting to give hockey a go. Mar bars awards were given to Jacob Cox, Sienna Allan and Ellie Stacey. Our golden children (first goals scorers, and game winners ever for the Tigers): the under 13s, have started the season well, drawing with the Saints (1-1). Best on went to new recruit Felix Warne. The underage team are showing promise, and despite the loss, fought hard. Best on went to Kate Renney. The women's game displayed a new sense of intensity, ready to stay for the 2017 season; final score was 0-2. Multiple short corners were to be had, and the tigers were even on the attack! Best on goes to Melanie Crowne for her efforts in goals. The men's game was good to watch, with both sides fighting hard in the heat. Grant Alday, dubbed the 'energiser bunny', took to the field like he had been playing for years, and was awarded best on for his efforts.

Well done to all hockey players, both old and new, it was great to see you out on the hockey field, and more importantly the smiles... showing you were all enjoying yourselves!

Tonight we head back to the Kaniera Hotel at Culgoa for tea and awards. Hope to see everyone there!

Go Tiges!
